Camera ready is a printers’ term that we used many years ago when we took photographs of pages to create a negative to burn on a printing plate. It means that the project came in perfectly sized and finished so all we had to do was take it to the dark room, snap the negative, and burn the plate.
We still use that term, but now it basically means that the printing project comes to us as a PDF file, ready to print.
At our shop, we do much of our layout with Adobe products: InDesign and Illustrator. Most of our clients use other products to set up their projects. Microsoft Word or Publisher are the most common. We have worked with Power Point, but it is a more complicated transposition.
When the client has one version of Word (or any other program) and we have a different version, they do not always play nicely together. PDFs avoid that problem.
However, the client needs to make absolutely certain that the design as created is exactly what was intended.
Camera ready is the most economical way to print. If it comes to us camera ready, the client is charged only for the printing and any finishing required. (i.e. folding, binding, laminating, etc.)
